Late lawal Afolabi Kunbi
LAGOS—Alleged mastermind of last week’s murder of a 32-year-old undergraduate at Oworo area of Lagos, identified simply as Alliu, weekend, gave a startling revelation of how he and four others snuffed the life out of their victim.
Alliu, a gateman in a compound adjacent the victim’s 43/45 Olorunfunmi Street, also disclosed to the shock of all that he killed the undergraduate to avoid paying him the sum of N32,000 debt owed him.
The lifeless body of the deceased, Lawal Afolabi Kunbi, who was a Business Administration student of Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo, was reportedly discovered 12 hours after he was discovered missing.
The deceased, who owned a provision store on the same street, reportedly sold his motorcycle to Alliu, in order to raise money to pay his school fees, about a month ago.
However , at about 8pm last Thursday, Kunbi reportedly received a telephone call from Alliu, informing him to come for his money. But that was the last time he was seen alive , as his lifeless body was reportedly found at about 9am the next day(Friday) behind Alliu’s compound, with his five fingers chopped off, while marks of violence were all over his body.
There was reportedly also a rope tied round his neck, suggesting that he could have been strangled.
Arrest
Five persons were arrested in connection with the murder, among them Alliu. Vanguard gathered that the blood from the spot where Kunbi’s body was dumped was trailed to Alliu’s apartment. Further checks on his apartment reportedly led to the discovery of a shirt that was stained with blood and a knife suspected to have been used to stab Kunbi to death.
Vanguard also gathered that Alliu was discovered to be cleaning the blood stain in his apartment.
But for the intervention of a team of policemen, Alliu would have been lynched by a mob.
Why I killed him
Shortly before he was rescued by policemen, Alliu who admitted masterminding Kunbi’s death, narrated how he was murdered.
He said: “ He sold a motorcycle to me for N40,000 last month and I paid him N8,000 with a promise to pay before the end of October. But he kept disturbing me to pay him the balance, saying he wanted to use it to pay his school fees. I delayed in paying because the motorcycle developed some faults that gulped the money I was to use to pay him.
“On that fateful day, I invited some of my relatives to my boys quarters because my boss was not around. We planned to kill him so as to stop him from disturbing me.
“I called him on his phone to come and collect his money. When he came, one of my relatives came from behind and tied a rope around his neck. But he started struggling and we over powered him in the process. One of us started stabbing him all over his body. I did not know that his hands were chopped off in the process. At the end of the day, we overpowered him. But it was not easy because he shattered the whole louvres. When we discovered he was dead, we wrapped him with a nylon and dumped his body at the back of the building before 4am.
“I woke up late to avoid being linked with the murder. Immediately, I went to fetch water from Kunbi’s compound to wash the blood stained wall and floor. Before I finished mopping the floor, some people barged into my apartment and started asking me questions about the murder. I denied initially but when they discovered the blood stained knife and his shirt, coupled with his telephone where I was discovered to be the last caller, I had to give up.
“Please do not kill me, I am ready to cooperate by getting others involved in this.”
At this point, the policemen who arrived the scene, rescued him from the mob and whisked him to the station.
When contacted, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr Joe Offor, said investigations were still ongoing.
